A flu-like viral infection illness outbreak has been increasing in Honiara, Parts of Guadalcanal and Malaita Province since last week.

Lab test results turned out to contain respiratory viruses with Rhinovirus and influenza H3, Minister for Health and Medical Service Dr Culwick Togamana updates the country this week.

Dr Togamana said, “Symptoms include flu or running nose, coughing fever, nausea, or vomiting, headache and shortness of breath,” He said. “Our laboratory technicians at the national referral Hospital, have since conducted laboratory tests from swabs collected from patients and discovered multiple respiratory, viruses with Rhino, virus, and influenza H3 predominating.”

He said cases are increasing daily and has advised the general public to take extra precautionary measures by protecting the most vulnerable people like children and elderly people.

“Our people must maintain safe and healthy practices. Parents take extra care of children as they are the most vulnerable including elderly people,” he said. “To those experiencing, flu-like symptoms drink, plenty of water, warm water and take Panadol. If fever persists in babies and children, please consult our doctors at your nearest clinic.”

“Rest, well, and eat plenty of vegetables and fruits. It is also important that malaria is ruled out by getting tested at your nearest clinic or private Clinic, once you develop a fever. Parents and Guardians. Our paediatrician has advised me now to inform you all to pay close attention to your babies and children. Drink lots of water and eat healthy local foods.”

Minister Togamana Cautioned, that there must be ‘No pay over-the-counter’ medication, must be prescribed by doctors.

“The public is advised to not acquire, or purchase over-the-counter antibiotics such as amoxicillin or any other medical drugs to treat the current flu. Antibiotics are not to treat viral infections, and are now of no use in the current outbreak. Any antibiotics or medical drugs acquired, or purchased must be done with a prescription from medical doctors.”

Some schools in Honiara have been forced to close following the outbreak.
